TYR Avictor 2.0 Review — The Comfortable Choice for Distance Swimmers

Today, I'm diving into the TYR Avictor, one of the oldest suits still in TYR's active lineup and one of the most popular choices I see at international competitions. The Avictor consistently shows up at the Olympics, pro series races, and major trials. But while it's dominating on the women's side, I wanted to see if it deserves the same respect from men's swimmers. Let's find out. Even with newer models hitting the market, the Avictor still has a clear role in TYR's lineup — it continues to receive fresh colorway updates heading into 2026, proving that TYR sees long-term value in this platform.
Quick Verdict
The TYR Avictor is an excellent all-around tech suit that prioritizes comfort, durability, and style over raw sprint performance. If you're a distance swimmer, medley racer, or someone who wants a suit that can handle multiple races without requiring delicate care, the Avictor at $375 is a serious contender. It won't outperform the premium Venzo for sprints, but it's arguably the better suit for longevity and peace of mind.

Design & First Impressions
The Avictor comes beautifully packaged with everything you'd expect from a premium tech suit: a detailed instruction guide (helpful even though the suit is ridiculously easy to put on), a substantial carry pouch, and the suit itself. I've got to give TYR credit here — the included carry pouch is actually larger and more functional than what comes with the Venzo. It features a mesh panel and a secure fastening mechanism, which is genuinely useful.
The design is where the Avictor really shines. The suit is available in multiple colorways, from solid black to bold geometric patterns. My version features that signature honeycomb pattern, and I have to say — it looks sick. This isn't just a functional suit; it's one you'll actually want to wear. There's something about putting on a suit that looks this good that gives you confidence on the block. Unlike some flashy designs that can look ridiculous, the Avictor manages to be visually striking without being over-the-top.
Fabric & Technology
Here's where things get technical and where the Avictor truly differentiates itself from TYR's flagship Venzo model. The Avictor uses what TYR calls the omni nylon lycra fabric — and this name is actually doing double duty. First, it refers to the actual textile material itself. If you look closely, you'll notice that distinctive honeycomb pattern. It's a cloth-like fabric, significantly different from the Venzo's frictionless fibre fabric. It's lighter at just 100 GSM vs 145 GSM.
TYR often gives subnames like subernoca to there models but whether you choose solid black or a more elaborate pattern, you're getting the same technology. The key takeaway: this fabric choice is intentional.

Fit & Comfort
I tested the Avictor in a size 25, high-waisted cut. If you're not already wearing high-waisted tech suits, I genuinely recommend making the switch. There's zero downside. You get more compression and support without any of the discomfort that some swimmers worry about. The waistband won't cut into your ribs if it's sized properly; it simply distributes fabric across a larger area of your core.
The comfort level of this suit is exceptional. The compression spreads evenly across your quads and hamstrings — I noticed no problem areas, no spots that feel excessively tight or pinchy. TYR added silicone gripping at the top of the back waistband and made the back waistband slightly thicker than the front. This design choice gives you more support where you actually need it while keeping the front more flexible around your stomach.
In the Water
Here's the honest assessment: the Avictor is a suit optimized for the distances, not the sprints. You'll notice the Avictor as a mainstay in 1500 freestyle finals, 400 freestyle, and 400 IM races. It's a popular choice among distance swimmers and medley racers. This isn't to say there aren't TYR-sponsored sprinters using the Avictor, but if you're solely a sprint swimmer looking to shave tenths, you'd be better served by the Venzo.
The Avictor gives you the support, compression, and comfort for longer efforts where you need stability across multiple laps. The fabric's cloth-like qualities provide a more consistent, dependable feel throughout your race — you're not fighting any surprises in the water.
Who Should Buy This Suit?
The TYR Avictor is your suit if you swim distance events (400+ meters) or medley, you want a tech suit you can actually throw in the wash without worrying, comfort and durability matter as much as raw speed, you prefer a suit that looks great on the block, or you're looking for exceptional value in the premium tech suit market. The Avictor might not be your best option if you're a sprint specialist (50/100 freestyle focus) or you need the absolute fastest suit available at any cost.
Final Verdict
Rating: 7/10
The TYR Avictor Supernova is not the fastest suit TYR makes — that's the Venzo — but it might be the best suit for most swimmers. The combination of comfort, durability, versatility, and design makes it genuinely difficult to find faults. The even compression, the functional carry pouch, and the stunning aesthetic appeal come together to create a suit that earns its place in TYR's lineup and belongs in your gear bag if you're swimming anything beyond sprint events. At $375, you're getting multiple races and genuine peace of mind. That's a strong value proposition in today's tech suit market.
