Mizuno GX Sonic Royal MT Review: The Middle Distance King

Swimmer wearing Mizuno GX Sonic Royal MT tech suit at competition

Quick Verdict

Rating: 7/10

Price Range: $300-400 USD (¥34,100 JPY)

Best For: 200m/400m & Versatile Swimmers

Mizuno's 7th generation GX Sonic Royal MT (Motion Type) is a brilliant middle-distance suit that delivers genuine performance. However, I need to be brutally honest: this is one of my most critical Mizuno reviews ever. The suit itself is top-tier, but the confusing naming scheme and minimal innovation from the previous generation are genuinely frustrating.

The Context: Mizuno's Confusing Evolution

In December 2025, Mizuno launched the 7th generation GX Sonic line, branded as "Royal." But here's where it gets frustrating: the naming scheme has become utterly baffling. We've gone from clear, logical names (Sprinter, Multi Racer) to cryptic abbreviations (NV, CR, ET) and now to a completely new system (PW, MT, SF).

MT stands for "Motion Type"—basically the middle-distance option. Previously, this was called CR (Compressive Release). Same suit, different name. And I'll get into my real frustration with this later.

Also, good luck actually buying this thing. It sells out in seconds. I had to use a Japanese dropshipping service to get my hands on one. This is a genuine accessibility problem, and it's holding back Mizuno's market share.

The Suit Itself: Excellence, But Familiar

Performance That Stands Out

Let me be clear: the Royal MT is a genuinely excellent middle-distance suit. The buoyancy is superb, the compression is present without being overbearing, and the overall design works perfectly for swimmers tackling 200m, 400m, or even 100m events. It's top-of-class performance.

Mizuno's Class-Leading Quality

You still get Mizuno's legendary water repellency treatment and build quality. This suit will last multiple seasons if you treat it well. The stitching is flawless, the material selection is premium, and every detail feels intentional.

Real Talk: Here's my frustration—and I'm being genuinely critical here. The Royal MT is barely different from the previous generation 6 CR. Same performance level, same comfort zone, same fit profile. Mizuno released it with a new name and a few minor tweaks, but the core suit is essentially identical.

Minor Changes You'll Notice

The waistband different than the previous generation, which I actually didn't love. Some of my teammates thought it was an improvement, but for me, i found it to flip down when I wore it. It's a small change, but worth noting.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Excellent buoyancy and positioning

  • Balanced compression—tight without restricting

  • Brilliant for 200m/400m swimmers

  • Class-leading water repellency

  • Outstanding build quality

  • Versatile across multiple distances

  • Good 100m-200m crossover option

Cons

  • Sells out instantly—availability nightmare

  • Requires Japanese proxy to purchase

  • Nearly identical to 6 CR predecessor

  • Confusing naming scheme

  • Improved or worse waistband

  • Not meaningfully innovative over gen 6

Fit & Sizing

The Royal MT follows Mizuno's traditional sizing approach— which is different to the rest of the world. I wear a L. If you buy in the USA they use nuermical sizes. Mine came from Japan.

The waist sits at a mid-level position, which is ideal for middle-distance work. Unlike the NV's high waist, this won't feel restrictive during a 400m grind.

I'd recommend trying it on beforehand if possible, but the Royal MT is more forgiving than the sprint models. It's a suit that'll feel good in the pool almost immediately.

The Honest Assessment: Should You Buy This?

Perfect For:

  • 200m/400m specialists – This is your suit

  • Swimmers doing 100/200 doubles – Excellent versatility

  • 200 IM swimmers

  • Swimmers who want balanced compression and buoyancy

  • Those seeking top-tier build quality

Consider Alternatives If:

  • You can still find the 6 CR (it's cheaper and essentially identical)

  • You can find the discontinued Neo SL (brilliant middle-distance suit)

  • You need a sprint-focused suit (get the NV instead)

  • You're looking for a soft, comfortable tech suit (wait for the SF)

  • You're frustrated by Mizuno's naming scheme and stock issues

Comparisons to Other Middle Distance Suits

vs. Arena Powerskin Carbon Air: Both are excellent middle-distance options. The Carbon Air is more accessible and easier to find. The Royal MT has superior water repellency and buoyancy. It also offers more compression.

vs. TYR Avictor 2.0: The Avictor is a solid all-rounder. The Royal MT is more specialized for middle distance, offering slightly better buoyancy for 200m+. If you want versatility across longer distances, the Avictor is safer.

vs. Previous Gen 6 CR: Honestly? Get the 6 CR if you can still find it. Save your money. They are pretty much the same.

Final Verdict

The Mizuno GX Sonic Royal MT is an excellent suit. The performance is genuinely top-tier, the build quality is impeccable, and it's perfect for middle-distance swimmers. But waistband and stock frustrations are reflected in the 7/10.

Mizuno took a brilliant suit (the 6 CR), made minimal changes, rebranded it, and released it at a higher same price point. They've also created a naming system so confusing that even enthusiasts like myself need a decoder ring.

If you're a 200m/400m swimmer and you can actually get your hands on one, the Royal MT is worth the investment. But if you can find the previous generation 6 CR at a discount, I'd honestly suggest going that route and saving your money.

My real hope is that Mizuno takes the feedback seriously and uses the next generation to actually innovate, rather than reshuffle the deck.
