A tech suit is the biggest equipment decision you will make as a competitive swimmer. It is what you wear to cash in months of training, and the right one genuinely changes the time you see on the scoreboard.

Over the last five years I have tested every flagship racing suit on the market, across sprints, distance and every stroke. I have never taken a sponsorship from a tech suit brand, so these rankings are exactly what I would tell a swimmer I coach.

TOP 10 Tech Suits for 2026, Ranked

1. Mizuno GX Sonic Royal PW | 10/10

The best sprint suit in the world. The Royal PW has the biggest performance impact of any suit I have tested, carrying on everything that made the GX Sonic 6 NV famous with even more snap and kick support. For 50s and 100s nothing else comes close.

The catch is availability. It is a Japanese release, so you will need a proxy service like Buyee to get one. My guide to the Royal range explains which cut to pick.

2. Arena Primo | 9.5/10

The best tech suit most swimmers can actually buy, and the best all rounder ever made. Arena ditched carbon fibre for its patented hyperforce fabric, and the result is championship level compression that stays comfortable from the 50 all the way up to the 1500.

It slides on in minutes, the water repellency is treated into every thread rather than sprayed on, and it is the first suit in years that convinced lifelong Carbon Air loyalists to switch. If you are buying one suit, this is it.

3. Mizuno GX Sonic Royal SF | 9.5/10

The hidden gem of the Mizuno lineup and the suit I personally reach for most often. Super versatile, comfortable enough for full sessions of racing, and it still carries Mizuno flagship fabric quality. If the PW is too much compression for your events, this is the answer.

4. TYR Venzo | 8.5/10

A dated model now, but still the go to if you want serious compression in a suit you can buy anywhere. I have swum a personal best in the Venzo, so I will always have a soft spot for it. Sprinters who like feeling locked in will love it.

5. Arena Veloce | 8/10

Hamstring taping combined with genuine comfort is a combination nobody else offers at this price. Built for 200m racing and brilliant at it. A higher waist cut would push it to a 9.

6. Speedo LZR Pure Valor 2.0 | 8/10

The most popular suit at the last Olympics for a reason. Two waist options, quick to put on, comfortable all day, and the new aerospace grade water repellent coating actually lasts. The Veloce and Royal SF do the same job slightly better, but you cannot go wrong here.

7. Arena Carbon Air2 | 7.5/10

The thinnest, easiest wearing carbon suit Arena makes, and the Air2 refined an already loved formula. If you want a barely there feel rather than heavy compression, start here.

8. Mizuno GX Sonic Royal MT | 7/10

The middle distance option in the Royal range. A great suit in its own right, just overshadowed by its PW and SF siblings.

9. TYR Avictor 2.0 | 7/10

The comfortable choice for distance swimmers. Light compression, easy fit, sensible price. Not a sprint weapon and not trying to be.

10. Arena Carbon Glide | 6/10

Still a solid distance racing option, but within Arena's own lineup the Primo now does everything the Glide does, better.

What to Look for in a Tech Suit

Compression or comfort. If you race longer events or lots of races back to back, you want something quick to put on and comfortable to wear between swims. If you are targeting short sprint events, higher compression and technical features like taping start to pay off.

Budget strategy. Do not judge a suit by its price tag. Brands deliberately price some suits high to seem premium. If you have £400 to spend, two or three good suits will often serve you better than one flagship. My guide on how much a tech suit should cost breaks this down.

Fit. Sizing matters more than brand. One size down can be painfully tight, one size up throws away the compression you paid for. Order from a retailer with a good returns policy and dial it in.

How long does a tech suit last?

Traditional sprayed on water repellent coatings fade after a handful of races. Newer suits like the Arena Primo treat every thread before weaving, so hydrophobicity is effectively permanent. Expect a full season or more from a flagship if you rinse it in fresh water and never tumble dry it.

Are Japanese suits worth importing?
